IHBA Newsletter Recap For The Month Of September: Highlights And Advocacy Efforts

As September draws to a close, the Illinois Hemp Business Association (IHBA) celebrates a month filled with vibrant discussions, impactful events, and significant advocacy for the hemp industry. This month has been instrumental in uniting our community, highlighting the need for awareness and support as we navigate the evolving landscape of hemp regulation. With key events that showcased our commitment to responsibility and legislative education, the IHBA remains steadfast in our mission to propel the industry forward.

Here’s a recap of our September highlights:

๐ŸŒŸ Recognizing Our Champions Senator Lakesia Collins and Representative La Shawn Ford:

On September 26, 2024, IHBA gathered to support State Senator Lakesia Collins and State Representative La Shawn Ford at Volare Ristorante Italiano. This event was particularly significant as both lawmakers are our primary legislative championsโ€”the House and Senate sponsors who carried our Hemp Regulation Bill (HB 5306 / SB 3790) last session and fought hard to prevent the ban (HB 4293) from passing legislatively. With a turnout of passionate hemp industry advocates, this gathering showcased the collaborative spirit within our community. Discussions centered on the key legislative efforts supporting our bill, reinforcing the need for continued advocacy and representation.

๐Ÿค Evening with Rep. Nicole La Ha

Side by side with the event for our legislative champions La Shawn Ford and Lakesia Collins, IHBA members also participated in an evening with State Representative Nicole La Ha at Davanti Enoteca in Western Springs. Attendees had a great time at the event and educated Rep La Ha about the hemp industry. They discussed critical issues and the importance of staying informed about potential regulatory changes, particularly drawing lessons from recent events in California. It became clear that when people are made aware of the situation coming up this November, they become more invested. These conversations are important and impactful for both our industry and the IHBA. Thank you to all who attended and contributed to making this event a success!

๐Ÿ”ฌ Exhibitor at the SIU Hemp and Cannabis Symposium

IHBA also participated as an Exhibitor at The Hemp & Cannabis Symposium on September 27, 2024, in Carbondale. This event brought together passionate scientists and innovators exploring the incredible potential of hemp. From discussions on cannabinoids combating SARS-CoV-2 variants to advancements in sustainable fuel, the symposium showcased groundbreaking research. It emphasized the urgency of advocating for our industry, highlighting the need for collaboration to prevent harmful regulations that could stifle innovation.

๐ŸŒ• Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration

On September 17, 2024, IHBA had the honor of participating in the Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration alongside Democratic Majority Conference Chair Theresa Mah, State Representative Hoan Huynh, Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth and Mayor Brandon Johnson. This event was a great opportunity to discuss the importance of hemp, wellness, and expanding opportunities for people of color in the hemp industry. It was inspiring to see leaders come together in support of a safer, more equitable community for all.

๐ŸŽฌ Cole Preson’s Watch Party for Illinois Cannabis Legalization Mini-Documentary

On September 18, 2024, IHBA also joined a watch party for Cole Preston’s insightful mini-documentary on cannabis legalization at Blue Island Beer Co. The turnout was fantastic, with hemp advocates and community members engaging in critical conversations about equity and fair regulations. It’s clear that our work is more than just industry growth; it’s about justice and creating opportunities for disadvantaged groups.

๐ŸŒ Engaging with National Leaders

In September, IHBA member Charles also had the unique opportunity to meet Elaine Chao, the first Asian American female Cabinet Secretary, during the National Asian/Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce and Entrepreneurship event. This encounter highlighted the vital connections we’re forging to advocate for hemp at the highest levels, ensuring our voices are heard in the corridors of power.

As September concludes, the IHBA looks back on a month rich with engagement and advocacy. Our achievements reflect our unwavering commitment to the hemp industry, and we are excited to build on this momentum in the months to come. Stay tuned for more updates and opportunities as we continue to champion the future of hemp in Illinois!
